They arrived at the famous Pork Pit and feasted on jerk chicken.

“We have to take some of this back for the guys.” Arielle wiped her hands on a napkin that had no more room for excess sauce.

“Your father will kill himself on this spice,” her mother replied, taking a long drink of bottled water.

“Well, my brothers can hang with it,” Brooke said. “I’m calling to see if they want pork or chicken.” She pulled out her phone to place the call. It was powered off. Then she remembered she hadn’t put it on the charger last night. “My battery is dead.” She returned it to her bag.

“No need to call. I know my sons. They’ll want the pork, but get some chicken too,” her mother said.

A group of men, five deep, climbed out of a car and made their way to the stand. They were tall and good looking and in excellent physical shape. Brooke’s first thought was they were athletes. They had that team look.

Cree raised her sunglasses and stood. “I’ll take care of that order.”

“Woot! They’re fine. I’m joining her.” Arielle scurried behind her sister.

Brooke shook her head. “Arielle is taking lessons from Cree. Watch out world.”

Her mother smiled. “You could stand to be a bit more like your sisters,” she said. “It’d be nice to see you find your special someone.”

“Mom, I haven’t even been divorced for a year.”

“But you want love in your life, otherwise you wouldn’t have married Andre in the first place.”

Brooke had no rebuttal there. “It’s not easy to find someone. Men aren’t like they were when you met daddy.”

Her mother laughed. “Honey, there have been low down men since Cain slew Abel.”

“It seems worse now.”

“You know more, because you young folks are watching it play out on Facebook and Twitter and reality T.V.”

Brooke smiled. “Yeah, there are like a thousand cable channels.”

“And Internet radio,” her mother added. “My point is, baby, you can’t live your life in fear. You have to trust your instincts.”

Brooke gave her mother a sideways glance. “I did that. It didn’t work.”

Her mother let out a long sigh. “I don’t believe you thought Andre was the right man. I think you let his charms sweep you away.”

Brooke frowned. “What makes you say that?”

“You eloped. You didn’t want to hear what your father or I had to say about him.”

Brooke shook her head. “Is that what you really think?”

“I know my daughter.”

Brooke remembered the guilt she felt after they’d eloped, but more importantly that familiar feeling in her belly before they’d eloped. Her mother was right. “Andre was easy to fall for.” His charming smile flashed into her memory like photos on a camera. “Instincts are subjective, Mama. It’s hard to trust them.”

“You do it in business every day.”

“I’m in I.T. It’s systems and code and programming. Math and science. There’s no instinct.”

“Everyone makes judgments, even the cashier in McDonald’s, so don’t tell me you don’t go with your gut from time to time. And you have to believe you can trust your prayers.
